Tool for Detection and Correction of Images with Diseased Eye Retinas

Loss or partial loss of eye sight can have major effect on quality of person's life. One of the most common diseases, which causes loss or partial loss of eye sight are diabetic retinopathy and age releated macular degeneration. Both of these diseases can be prevented or mediated by early detection and proper treatment. The fundus camera, which is used to capture eye retina, has had major effect on increasing quality and speed of early detection. Images captured by fundus camera can be automatically analyzed in order to detect any possible signs of retina damage. This thesis proposes one possible way of automating this process. First part of this thesis describes eye, its diseases and capturing technology. Second part then proposes way of automating detection process and its implementation. Lastly, the results are evaluated.
Damage detection using a cogwheel load - numerical case study

A moving impulse load generated by a heavy cogwheel (CW) can be used as a testing excitation for bridges. This proposed type of dynamic load acts along the entire driving path, its intensity is adjustable, and it can be very efficient in the case of resonance. However, higher harmonic components are an inevitable effect of this type of loading, complicating the vibration analysis. The present study investigates suitable procedures to detect and locate damage in structures using a cogwheel load and only one or a few transducers mounted on the bridge. This arrangement seems to be sensitive to early damage indication. Damage localization is also possible, but further research will be required to increase its credibility.

Modelling of health monitoring signals and detection areas for aerospace structures

This paper is focused on Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) for aerospace use. It analyses the performance of commercially available finite element (FE) software packages for the simulation of propagation of ultrasonic guided waves (UGW) in typical aerospace structures. The purpose of the research is to support activities leading to the introduction of UGW based health monitoring on aerospace structures, as well as to support the design of future structures with integrated health monitoring. Activities are demonstrated on panels with growing complexity (adding different materials, sensors, damage types etc.). FE simulations are used to identify “detection areas” of UGW sensors. This output can be directly applied to the design of future aerospace structures with an integrated SHM system (to ensure the proper planning of the placement of UGW sensors).
Health monitoring of building structures: preliminary considerations on a case study

Ageing, erosion, local damage or increase of the operating loads can decrease the reliability and load bearing capacity of building structures. Vibration monitoring may provide a promising solution of this problem, however robust health monitoring techniques are needed before wider practical applications. The presented analytical and experimental case study on a simple supported steel beam is an introductory practical investigation into this topic. It shows the sensitivity of chosen parameters to artificially induced damage and outlines possible directions or further research in conclusions. Special attention is paid to simultaneous monitoring of deformations and strains which can provide us with a useful information about the stress redistribution in monitored or tested structures.
